Washer Not Draining — What Is Actually Happening
A washing machine that won't drain leaves you with a drum full of water and soaking wet laundry. This guide explains the specific causes — by washer type and brand — what you can safely try at home, and when to call for same day repair in Berkeley.
Water in the drum right now?
Do not force a spin cycle on a washer full of water. The weight can strain the motor and bearings. Drain the water first through the filter access panel (front-load washers) or by carefully removing the drain hose with a bucket ready. Then diagnose.
Try This First — Drain Pump Filter (Front-Load Washers)
Most front-load washers made by Samsung, LG, Bosch, Electrolux, and Whirlpool have an accessible drain pump filter at the bottom front of the machine. This filter catches coins, buttons, and debris before they enter the pump. It should be cleaned every 3-6 months. A clogged filter is the most common cause of a front-load washer not draining, and it is user-serviceable.
- 1
Prepare for water
Place towels and a shallow pan or large baking sheet in front of the washer. The filter panel will release water when opened.
- 2
Open the access panel
On most machines it is a small rectangular panel at the bottom front of the machine. It may require a coin or flat-head screwdriver to open.
- 3
Slow-drain the emergency hose
Most washers have a small rubber cap or hose next to the filter. Remove it slowly and let water drain into your pan. This may take several minutes.
- 4
Unscrew and remove the filter
Turn the filter counterclockwise. Remove it and rinse it under running water. Check the pump cavity for foreign objects.
- 5
Reinstall and test
Replace the filter, close the access panel, and run a short spin/drain cycle. If the washer drains, the filter was the problem.
If filter cleaning doesn't fix it
A clean filter and still-not-draining washer means the drain pump motor has failed, the drain hose is kinked or blocked at the standpipe connection, or the control board is not sending the drain signal. Call Fast Help for same day repair — we carry drain pumps for all major brands.
Causes by Washer Type
Front-Load Washer (Samsung, LG, Bosch, Whirlpool, Electrolux)
- Clogged drain pump filter — Try at home first (see above)
- Failed drain pump motor — Most common repair, same day parts in stock
- Kinked drain hose — Check behind the machine where the hose connects to the standpipe
- Control board not sending drain signal — Less common, requires diagnosis
Top-Load Washer (Whirlpool, GE, Maytag, Amana, Samsung)
- Failed drain pump — Most common. Requires internal access. Same day repair.
- Lid switch failure — The washer will not drain if the lid switch does not signal the cycle to proceed. Opening and closing the lid firmly can sometimes unstick a marginal switch.
- Belt-drive motor coupler failure (older Whirlpool/GE) — The coupler between the motor and pump breaks. Inexpensive same day repair.
Error Codes Meaning Drain Fault

| Whirlpool/Maytag | F8 E1 | Drain fault. Pump or lid switch diagnosis needed. |
| GE | E3 | Drain error. Pump or hose diagnosis. |
| Bosch | E23 | Drain pump fault. Clean filter, then call if E23 returns. |
| Electrolux | E11 | Drain error. Pump or control board diagnosis needed. |

Frequently Asked Questions
- Do not try to force the spin cycle. First locate the drain pump filter (front-load washers have a small access panel at the bottom front of the machine). Place towels on the floor, open the small cap on the filter, and let the water drain out slowly — it will come out in a stream. Once the water is drained, clean the filter. If the washer still won't drain after a clean filter, call Fast Help at (510) 947-6664 for same day repair in Berkeley.
- A front-load washer that won't drain has one of three problems: a clogged drain pump filter (the most common and easiest to fix yourself), a kinked or blocked drain hose, or a failed drain pump motor. Start by cleaning the filter access panel at the bottom front. If the washer still won't drain after a clean filter, the pump motor has likely failed.
- A top-load washer not draining is usually a failed drain pump, a clogged pump, or a lid switch that is not signaling the control board to proceed with draining. Top-load washers do not have an accessible filter like front-load machines. A technician will access the pump from inside the cabinet.
- OE (LG) and 5E (Samsung) both mean drain fault — the washer is not draining within the expected cycle time. Start by cleaning the drain pump filter at the bottom front of the machine. If the code returns after cleaning the filter, the drain pump motor requires replacement. Fast Help repairs OE and 5E same day in Berkeley.
