Dishwasher Not Draining — Try This First
A dishwasher with standing water after a cycle has a drain fault. In most cases, this is caused by a dirty filter — something you can clear yourself in about 5 minutes. If filter cleaning doesn't resolve it, the drain pump motor or drain hose requires repair.
Step 1: Clean the Dishwasher Filter
- 1
Remove the bottom rack
Slide the bottom rack out completely and set it aside.
- 2
Locate the filter
The main filter is a cylindrical piece at the center-bottom of the dishwasher tub. It is usually gray or white plastic. There is also a flat mesh filter surrounding it.
- 3
Remove the cylindrical filter
Turn it counterclockwise (usually a quarter turn) and lift it straight up.
- 4
Clean both filter components
Rinse the cylindrical filter under running water. Use a soft brush to clear the holes. Remove and rinse the flat mesh filter as well.
- 5
Reinstall and test
Replace both filter components. Run a short wash cycle or a Rinse cycle. If the dishwasher drains, the filter was the problem.
If filter cleaning doesn't fix it
A clean filter and still not draining means the drain pump motor has failed, the drain hose is blocked at the garbage disposal connection, or the check valve in the drain hose has stuck closed. Call Fast Help — we carry drain pump parts for all major brands.
Check the Drain Hose Connection
Many dishwasher drain faults are caused by a blocked connection at the garbage disposal or kitchen drain, not by the dishwasher itself. If your dishwasher drains into a garbage disposal, make sure the disposal has been run recently and is not backed up. Also confirm the disposal's knockout plug was removed when the dishwasher was installed — this is a very common installation error that causes brand-new dishwashers to not drain.

- Standing water after a dishwasher cycle almost always indicates a drain fault. - Remove the bottom rack. Locate the cylindrical filter at the bottom center of the dishwasher — it usually turns counterclockwise to remove. Rinse it under running water and use a soft brush to clear debris. Also check the flat mesh filter surrounding it. Replace both and run a short cycle. Cleaning the filter should be done monthly.
- Bosch E24 means the dishwasher has a drain fault — it is not draining within the expected cycle time. Clean the dishwasher filter first. If E24 returns after a clean filter, the drain pump motor has failed. Fast Help carries Bosch drain pump assemblies and repairs E24 same day in Berkeley.
- Bosch E15 means the flood protection sensor in the base pan has been triggered — water has leaked into the base of the dishwasher. Stop use immediately. This requires a technician to find and repair the leak source and clear the base pan. Call Fast Help at (510) 947-6664.
