Most Berkeley and East Bay homeowners know that wildfire season means closing windows, using air purifiers, and watching air quality indices. What is less widely known is that smoke events also affect your appliances — particularly refrigerators, dryers, and anything with an external air intake. This guide covers what to check after a significant smoke event.

How Smoke Affects Your Refrigerator

Your refrigerator has a condenser — a heat-exchange coil that releases heat from the refrigerant into the surrounding air. On most refrigerators, the condenser is at the bottom (accessed from the front grill) or at the back. It requires airflow to work efficiently.

During a multi-day smoke event, particulate matter (the fine particles that create the hazy orange sky Bay Area residents know from wildfire season) settles on every horizontal surface — including refrigerator condenser coils. If you've gone through several smoke events without cleaning your condenser, the accumulation can be significant.

A condenser coated in smoke particulate and dust cannot release heat efficiently. The compressor runs longer and harder to maintain the set temperature. Over time, this stresses the compressor. You may notice:

  • The refrigerator running more often than usual
  • The sides or top of the refrigerator feeling warmer than normal
  • Slightly higher electricity bills
  • In severe cases, the refrigerator struggling to maintain temperature on hot days

Clean your condenser coils after smoke events

Unplug the refrigerator. Locate the condenser coils — usually behind the front kickplate or at the back. Use a vacuum with a soft brush attachment to clear accumulated particulate. Do this annually normally; after significant wildfire smoke events, consider doing it more frequently. Sub-Zero refrigerators have condensers that are more accessible — see your model's manual.

Dryer Vents and Smoke Particles

Your dryer's exhaust vent runs from the dryer through a duct to the outside of your home. During a wildfire smoke event, the airflow through this duct goes both ways — warm air exits during dryer operation, but when the dryer is off, outside air can be drawn in passively. Smoke particles accumulate inside the vent duct alongside the normal lint buildup.

This is another reason why dryer vent cleaning matters beyond just efficiency — wildfire season increases particulate accumulation in external ducts. If you haven't had your dryer vent cleaned in the past year and you've gone through a fire season, that is worth addressing.

A blocked dryer vent is also the most common cause of dryer thermal fuse failure — the fault that causes a dryer to run without heat. See our dryer not heating guide for more on this. Fast Help always clears the dryer vent when replacing a thermal fuse, and recommends annual vent clearing for homes in California's wildfire-adjacent areas.

Dryer vent fires and wildfire risk

A dryer vent clogged with lint and smoke particulate is a fire hazard — ironic given the context. The U.S. Fire Administration reports approximately 2,900 home dryer fires annually. In fire-risk California communities, this is doubly worth taking seriously. If your dryer takes significantly longer than normal to dry clothes after a fire season, have the vent checked.

Refrigerator Water Filters and Air Filters

Many modern refrigerators have both a water filter (for the ice maker and dispenser) and an internal air filter that circulates air through a carbon filter to reduce odors. During and after a wildfire smoke event, these filters work harder than usual.

If your refrigerator has an internal air filter (check your manual — many Samsung, LG, and Whirlpool French door models do), replacing it after a significant smoke event is worthwhile. These filters are available at appliance parts stores and are typically inexpensive.

Similarly, ice maker and dispenser water filters should be replaced on schedule — most manufacturers say every 6 months — and after major smoke events is a natural time to check whether the current filter is due for replacement.

PSPS Events Combined with Smoke — A Double Hit

The worst appliance scenario for Bay Area homeowners during wildfire season is a PSPS outage during a smoke event. You cannot open windows, the air quality is unhealthy, and your refrigerator has stopped cooling. The combination of smoke-reduced condenser efficiency and a compressor restart after a long outage puts maximum stress on the refrigerant system.

If you come through a PSPS event during wildfire season and your refrigerator seems to be running constantly but not cooling as well as it used to, have it checked. What looks like a minor inefficiency can be the early sign of a compressor that has been stressed beyond its reliable operating range.

After a Fire Event — Quick Checklist

  1. 1

    Clean refrigerator condenser coils

Unplug and vacuum the condenser coils at the base or back of the refrigerator. Removes particulate accumulation that reduces cooling efficiency.

  2. 2

    Check dryer vent for blockage

Run the dryer for 5 minutes with the outside vent termination visible. You should see air flowing out. If airflow seems weak, the vent needs cleaning.

  3. 3

Replace refrigerator air filter if applicable

Check your refrigerator manual. Many French door models have an internal air filter. Replace it after fire season.

  4. 4

Replace refrigerator water filter if due

Check when you last replaced the water filter. After a fire event is a natural time to replace it if it has been 6+ months.

  5. 5

    Call if anything seems off

Refrigerator running constantly, dryer taking much longer than normal, or any appliance showing error codes after a fire event — call {PHD} for a free diagnosis.
